Many organisations in the energy sector have their safety critical data held across multiple disparate systems, from ERP through to spreadsheets.  This information, which you rely on to make decisions, can easily become clouded, unreliable or at worst untrusted.  Dueling spreadsheets can create a face-off, where there are two or more versions of a spreadsheet with inconsistent data.  When there are multiple users of a spreadsheet this leads inevitably to version control issues and loss of data quality.

Spreadsheets have a tendency to evolve over time, and become more complicated, making it increasingly difficult for users to maintain them.  Perhaps more worryingly is the lack of quality control that spreadsheets seem to evade as they evolve inside an organisation.  Formula inaccuracies can, and do, go unnoticed for long periods of time.

We work in an environment where the management of change (MOC) is a recognised best-practice, ensuring that when changes to a piece of kit or an asset are proposed, the proposed change is subject to due diligence.  Yet I find it alarming that many organisations with operated assets are still running their businesses and making big decisions off spreadsheets.
